Spoken Word Poetry WorkshoPS

Designed and taught by a former teacher with more than 20 years of facilitation experience making poetry come alive, Words To Power’s unique, culturally relevant, and engaging curriculum supports the following subject areas from 4th through 12th grades: Language Arts, Social Studies, Character Development, Public Speaking, and Leadership. Whether one-time or with follow-up sessions, this 60-75 minute workshop utilizes powerful spoken word poetry, an application of metacognition to poetry, an easy-to-understand graphic organizer, scaffolded writing prompts, and open mic style sharing to inspire youth to find their voice and speak their truth. Students gain confidence in their writing and public speaking skills while learning the power of their words to create positive change in their communities. Our Words Are Powerful
Youth Publication And Book Release

Our Words Are Powerful offers underserved youth an authentic opportunity for academic excellence, creative expression, and community engagement. Youth in the Denver metro area can submit their poems online to the yearly publication. Selected youth contributors receive 3 copies of the perfect-bound book that includes their names and powerful words. They are also paid to perform at the summer book release, showcase, and open mic with promotional materials featuring their names and photos. In a very real way, youth contributors are able to see themselves in the cultural production of knowledge and as part of societal change. Click here to read/purchase previous books
