“I am the root of strength
from my ancestors.
I carry the dreams for my people
hoping for a better tomorrow.
I come from dreams of a land
where reality wakes you up,
to reach out for hope.
I can touch determination
and motivation.”

-R.R. (age 15)

from “Our Roots, Our Words, Our Power. Volume 2 (ages 15+)”
-youth poetry book published in 2024 by Words To Power and distributed in WTP workshops

Feel Good Friday…a story from Words To Power’s poetry workshops at a high school in Jeffco

During our workshops in an English Composition class, students showed incredible insight during our conversations about the connections between Indigenous people across borders, human nature, addiction, and the power of community. They wrote powerful poetry as a result. Almost all participants presented their words during a special event in front of peers from other classes. A post-program survey captured their thoughts about our time together (percent agree):

-showed me the power of my words (100%)

-taught me a way to cope/deal with my challenges (91%)

-made me feel more confident in myself (100%)

-inspired me to be more of a leader (100%)

Words To Power is proud to announce the theme of our next youth-written book of poetry: We Are The Dreams Of Our Ancestors. We will publish 3 volumes (elementary, middle, and high). With increased interest, we will only accept poems from youth who have participated in our programs. In fact, we have thus far received 110 submissions from participants in our school partnerships. Words To Power’s poetry workshops guide students in writing and submitting powerful poems. Interested educators: contact us ASAP as our calendar is filling up fast.
